Drug misuse affects individual users and the communities they live in,
and the Government's 10 year strategy 'Tackling Drugs to Build a Better
Britain' sets out ambitious targets to impact on the problem and its
consequences. Drug misuse is viewed as a serious social problem for different but
connected reasons:
The physical health of
users can be damaged by the toxic effects a drug, dependence or the way it is
used; ·The impact on the individual, families and friends · links
between drug misuse and psychiatric illness can often be established, although
it is not always easy to distinguish which came first;
Patterns of drug use vary over
time and in different localities, however, in Poole drug misuse is becoming
more common and the negative social consequences more obvious.
Referrals to the Poole Addictions Community Team can be made
either direct through self referral or referral from other
professionals.
The Team has a responsibility for assessing the need for appropriate
residential and day treatment for people following an assessment of their
needs. Because of the complexity of the problem it is essential for
organisations to work in partnership to develop and implement a strategic
approach to deliver the National Drugs Strategy at a local level. To facilitate
this approach the Poole Drug Action Team has been established to bring together
all of the agencies concerned with reducing levels of drug misuse.
